The above is the very first entry in my grandfather’s war diaries – his recall to active duty with II./Art. Ers. Abt 50 in Leipzig. The full meaning of the unit’s name (in German) is “II./Artillerie-Ersatz-Abteilung 50”, or, in English: “II. Battalion/Training- and Reinforcement Unit 50”.
The first weeks back in uniform were spent in officer cadet training, which, I assume, should also have included a good portion of refreshment training, given that the new soldiers (like my grandfather) had not actively served for some time. As I said: the times were relatively quiet in the East and in the West, a good time to bring the Wehrmacht up to numbers and into position for the already decided War against France.
